Why won't my power window go up?

Short answer

If you hear the motor whir but the glass doesn't move, the window regulator (the mechanism that lifts the glass) has usually broken. If you hear nothing, the motor, switch, fuse or wiring is the likely cause. Try the window from the master switch on the driver's door and from its own switch. If it's stuck open, a shop can usually secure it closed the same day so you can park the car safely.

Sound tells you a lot

What you hear Likely cause
Motor runs, glass doesn't move or drops Broken regulator cable or track
Grinding or clicking, glass moves crooked Regulator failing
Nothing from one window Motor, switch or wiring in the door
Nothing from any window Fuse, relay, master switch or lockout button
Works from its own switch, not the driver's Master switch

What to check

  1. The window lock button on the driver's door.
  2. Both switches for that window.
  3. The fuse for power windows (your manual shows which one).

What we do

We test the switch, wiring and motor to find the fault, and replace only the failed part, often the regulator. If you need the car back fast, we can get the window closed and secure first so you're not stuck with an open car. One customer came back from vacation to a driver's window that wouldn't close; we explained the fix clearly and got them home safely.

More questions

My window goes down but not up. Why?

The switch contacts for "up" may be worn, or the motor is weak and can't lift the glass against the seals. A failing regulator can also bind in one direction.

Can I close a stuck window myself?

Sometimes, by holding the switch up while gently lifting the glass with your palms on both sides. If it drops again, tape or a temporary fix will get you to a shop.

All my windows stopped at once. Why?

Check the window lockout button on the driver's door first. If that's not it, suspect a fuse, relay or the master switch.
