Suspension and steering repair in San Mateo

Short answer

When your car clunks over bumps, wanders, pulls or rides rough, we find the specific worn part, show you a photo of it, and replace it. You get back a car that drives straight, quiet and planted, and we'll tell you if a part someone else flagged is still fine.

What we fix

  • Shocks and struts, including loaded strut assemblies
  • Control arms, bushings and ball joints
  • Sway bars and end links, a common source of clunks
  • Tie rods and steering racks
  • Power steering pumps, hoses and fluid
  • Wheel bearings and hub assemblies
  • Air suspension systems
  • Alignments after suspension work

How we find the cause

Suspension noises are hard to pin down because sound travels through the whole car. We start with a test drive to hear what you hear, then put the car on the lift and check each joint for play, each bushing for cracks and each shock for leaks. When we find it, you get a photo and a plain explanation of what it does and what happens if it's left.

Some things can wait, like a slightly weeping shock on a car you're about to sell. Some can't, like a loose ball joint or tie rod. We'll tell you which is which.

Signs it's time for a look

  • A clunk or knock over bumps or speed humps
  • The car drifts or pulls to one side on a straight road
  • The steering wheel isn't centered when you're driving straight
  • Uneven or fast tire wear
  • A bouncy, floaty ride, or the car leans hard in turns
  • Stiff, noisy or heavy steering

If you want a firmer, softer or lower ride rather than a repair, see performance installs.

Alignment
We needed an urgent alignment for new suspension installation and they were fast to respond. Our car is not the newest and I expected an upsell on additional work needed, but I was so pleased to get a call after the service and confirm the car was doing just fine.

Steering
Our steering wheel felt stiff and made sounds when we tried to turn it… it took about 5-10 minutes for them to figure out what was wrong with the car.

More questions

How do I know if my shocks or struts are worn?

Signs include a bouncy or floaty ride, the nose diving under braking, clunks over bumps, fluid on the shock body, and uneven tire wear. A bounce test is a rough guide; an inspection on the lift is the real answer.

Do I need an alignment after suspension work?

After replacing parts that affect wheel angles, such as struts, control arms or tie rods, yes. We'll tell you when it's needed and when it isn't.

Can you fix air suspension?

Yes. Depending on the car and how you use it, the options include repairing the air system or converting to conventional springs. We'll explain the trade-offs.

Someone told me I need ball joints. Can you check?

Yes. We'll check for play, take photos, and tell you honestly whether they need replacing now.
