Check engine light and electrical diagnosis in San Mateo

Short answer

A trouble code tells us where to start looking, not what to replace. We test the circuit, the sensor and the part until we know the real cause, so the fix holds, the light stays off, and no parts get replaced on a guess.

Why a code isn't a diagnosis

When the check engine light comes on, the car's computer stores a trouble code describing what it saw, such as "system too lean" or "cylinder 3 misfire." That's a clue, not an answer. A lean code can come from a vacuum leak, a weak fuel pump, a dirty sensor or a bad gasket. Replacing the part named in a quick online search often leaves you with a new part and the same light.

We use the code to decide where to start, then confirm with live data, smoke testing for leaks, electrical testing and a look at the part itself.

What we diagnose

  • Check engine lights, misfires, rough idle and hesitation
  • No-starts and stalling: battery, starter, alternator, fuel and ignition
  • Charging problems and batteries that keep dying
  • Electrical faults: power windows, locks, lights and wiring
  • Sensors: oxygen, airflow, crank and cam position, wheel speed
  • Hybrid systems, including the 12-volt battery that keeps many hybrids from starting
  • Smog failures caused by a warning light or an incomplete readiness check

What you get

A clear explanation of what's wrong, photos where they help, and the fix that addresses the cause. If the fix is simple, like a loose gas cap or a connector that worked loose, we'll tell you that and keep it simple.

Honda Fit
I found them to be honest, reliable and thorough with the work they did on my Honda Fit. They were able to diagnose a problem that other auto shops had been having issues finding.

2009 Toyota Prius
I had my 2009 prius "check engine" light on that somehow caused smog test failing… The check engine light issues were fixed. Smog test was passed.

Alternator
My car died yesterday… they were so kind and helped me out by installing an alternator and I was on the road again.

More questions

Can't you just read the code and tell me what's wrong?

Reading the code is the first step. A code like P0420 or P0171 names a symptom the computer noticed, and several different faults can cause it. Testing finds which one it is.

Is it safe to drive with the check engine light on?

If it's steady and the car drives normally, usually yes, for a short time. If it's flashing, slow down and get the car checked soon; that usually means a misfire that can damage the catalytic converter. More here.

Do you fix electrical problems like windows, lights and batteries?

Yes. Power windows, lighting, charging systems, starters, batteries, sensors and wiring faults.

Other shops couldn't find my problem. Can you?

Intermittent and hard-to-find faults are a big part of what we do. Tell us everything you've noticed and what's already been replaced.
