Catalytic converter replacement after theft
If your catalytic converter was stolen, we replace it with a California-legal converter, rebuild the pipes the thief cut, and can install a theft shield. You get your car back quiet, legal and able to pass smog, and harder to target again.
What a proper repair includes
Thieves usually cut the exhaust pipe on both sides of the converter with a battery saw, often in under a minute. That leaves jagged pipe ends, sometimes damaged oxygen sensor wiring, and an exhaust that's too short for a direct-fit part.
A proper repair:
- Installs an OEM or CARB-approved converter for your exact vehicle
- Extends and welds the cut pipes so everything fits cleanly and seals
- Checks the oxygen sensors and their wiring, which are often damaged in the theft
- Clears codes and confirms the car's emissions self-tests complete, so it will pass smog
- Optionally adds a converter shield or cage to deter the next attempt
Cars that get targeted
Hybrids like the Prius, trucks and SUVs with high ground clearance, and some Honda and Toyota models are common targets because their converters are easy to reach or contain more precious metal. If you drive one, a shield is worth considering. More on what to do after a theft.
Back on the road after a theft
I was a recent victim of cat converter theft… they got my new cat welded on in less time that estimated and did an outstanding job (extended the pipes to account for the length sawed off by the thief and installed my new cat shield for me too).

More questions
Can I drive without a catalytic converter?
Short distances to a shop, carefully, yes. It will be very loud and will set a check engine light. Exhaust can also leak near the cabin, so keep windows cracked and don't idle in an enclosed space. It's not legal to keep driving that way in California.
Does the replacement converter need to be California-approved?
Yes. In California, aftermarket converters must be approved by the Air Resources Board (CARB) for your specific vehicle, or you can use an OEM converter.
Does insurance cover a stolen catalytic converter?
Often, if you have comprehensive coverage. File a police report first; your insurer will usually want the report number.
