What are my rights at a California auto repair shop?

Short answer

Under California's Automotive Repair Act, a shop must be registered with the Bureau of Automotive Repair, give you a written estimate before starting work, and get your consent before charging more than that estimate. You're entitled to an itemized invoice listing parts and labor, and to have your replaced parts returned if you ask for them when you authorize the work (warranty and core-exchange parts are exceptions).

The key protections

Right What it means for you
Written estimate Before any work, you get a written estimate for the specific job
Your consent for changes Any additional work or cost over the estimate needs your approval first
Itemized invoice The final invoice lists each repair, the parts (and whether new, used or rebuilt) and labor
Replaced parts back Ask at drop-off and the shop must return the old parts (with some exceptions)
Registered shops Repair shops must be registered with the Bureau of Automotive Repair

How to use them well

  • Read the estimate before you sign. Make sure it describes the job, not just "diagnose."
  • Ask how you'll be contacted if something else comes up. A text with a photo is ideal.
  • Keep your invoices. They're your service history and support any warranty claim.
  • Ask questions. A good shop is happy to explain what a part does and why it needs replacing.

How we work

You'll get a clear estimate before we start, a text with photos if we find anything else, and nothing extra done without your OK. Ask for your old parts and they're yours.

More questions

Can a shop charge me more than the estimate?

Not without your consent. If they find something else, they must contact you, explain it, and get your approval before doing additional work or charging more.

Can I get my old parts back?

Yes, if you ask when you authorize the work. Exceptions include parts that must go back to a supplier under warranty or as a core exchange.

How do I check if a shop is registered?

Shops display their Automotive Repair Dealer registration. You can also look up a shop's license on the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) website.

Where do I file a complaint about a repair shop?

With the California Bureau of Automotive Repair, which mediates complaints and licenses shops. Try resolving it directly with the shop first.
