Do hybrids need different maintenance?
Mostly the same, with a few additions. Hybrids still need oil changes, tire rotations, brake inspections, brake fluid, filters and coolant. On top of that, many have a separate inverter coolant loop, a hybrid battery cooling fan or filter that needs cleaning, and a 12-volt battery that's a common cause of no-starts. Brakes often last much longer thanks to regenerative braking.
The same as any car
- Engine oil and filter on schedule
- Tire rotation and alignment
- Brake inspection and brake fluid replacement
- Engine and cabin air filters
- Engine coolant
- Wipers, lights, suspension and steering checks
Hybrid-specific items
| Item | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| 12-volt auxiliary battery | Weak 12V batteries are the top reason hybrids won't start |
| Inverter / hybrid system coolant | A separate cooling loop on many hybrids, with its own interval |
| Hybrid battery cooling fan and filter | On models like the Prius, the intake can clog with dust and pet hair, causing the battery to run hot |
| Brake calipers and slide pins | Can stick from light use |
| Spark plugs | Long intervals, but still due eventually |
Getting the most from a hybrid
Keep the battery cooling intake clear (it's often near a rear seat), don't let the car sit for weeks without a battery maintainer or regular drives, and keep up with the hybrid coolant. Hybrids routinely run past 200,000 miles when they're cared for. Hybrid service
From drivers who came to us
I always went to the dealer to get service on our vehicles. But lately, I got the feeling that the dealer was recommending unnecessary work… Today I bring my wife's Lincoln MKZ Hybrid for 100k miles of service.
My daughter just bought her 1st car, an 2014 Acura-Hybrid, from SHIFT who has a 7-day full-refund return policy. Dylan & Derrick thoroughly inspected the car, and made some minor adjustments/repairs in short-order.

More questions
Do hybrids need oil changes less often?
The engine runs less, but the interval is still set by the manufacturer, often similar to a regular car. Follow your maintenance reminder.
Why are my hybrid's brakes rusty or sticking?
Because regenerative braking does most of the stopping, the friction brakes get used less. Slide pins and pads can corrode from lack of use, so regular inspection matters.
Can any shop work on a hybrid?
Routine maintenance is standard work for a well-equipped shop. High-voltage system repairs require specific training and procedures.
