Hybrid car service and repair in San Mateo
Hybrids need the same core maintenance as any car, plus a few things specific to the hybrid system, like the 12-volt battery that keeps many of them from starting. We maintain and repair hybrids from Toyota, Lexus, Honda, Acura, Ford and Lincoln, so yours keeps running quietly and efficiently.
Hybrids we work on
Toyota Prius and Prius family, Camry, RAV4 and Highlander hybrids; Lexus CT 200h, RX and ES hybrids; Honda and Acura hybrids; Ford and Lincoln hybrids such as the Fusion and MKZ Hybrid; and others. Customers have brought us everything from a 2009 Prius that failed smog to a Lincoln MKZ Hybrid due for its 100,000-mile service.
What's different about hybrid maintenance
- The 12-volt battery is small and often tucked in the trunk or under a seat. When it weakens, the car won't power up, even if the big hybrid battery is fine.
- Inverter or hybrid-system coolant is a separate cooling loop on many hybrids, with its own service interval.
- Brakes wear slowly thanks to regenerative braking, but calipers and slide pins can stick from lack of use. Brake fluid still needs regular changes.
- The engine runs less often, so oil can be exposed to more short-trip moisture. Follow the oil interval the manufacturer gives for your driving.
- Hybrid battery cooling fans and filters, on models like the Prius, can clog with dust and pet hair and should be cleaned.
Safety
Hybrid systems run at high voltage, shown by orange cables. We follow the manufacturer's procedures for working safely around them. More on hybrid maintenance.
Hybrids we've kept running
My Lexus CT 200H was in dying need of a new battery after nine years with over 146K miles… They got my car up and running by replacing a new starter battery and rear shocks since they were leaking by the end of the day.
I had my 2009 prius "check engine" light on that somehow caused smog test failing… The check engine light issues were fixed. Smog test was passed.
I always went to the dealer to get service on our vehicles. But lately, I got the feeling that the dealer was recommending unnecessary work… Today I bring my wife's Lincoln MKZ Hybrid for 100k miles of service.
My daughter just bought her 1st car, an 2014 Acura-Hybrid, from SHIFT who has a 7-day full-refund return policy. Dylan & Derrick thoroughly inspected the car, and made some minor adjustments/repairs in short-order.

More questions
Can an independent shop service a hybrid?
Yes. Most hybrid maintenance, such as oil, brakes, fluids, filters, tires and the 12-volt battery, is standard work for a well-equipped shop. Federal law protects your warranty as long as maintenance follows the schedule.
My hybrid won't start or go into Ready mode. Is the hybrid battery dead?
Usually not. The most common cause is a weak 12-volt auxiliary battery, which powers the computers that start the car. Read more.
Do hybrid brakes last longer?
Often, yes, because regenerative braking does much of the work. They still need inspection, and the brake fluid still needs changing on schedule.
