Why is my steering wheel hard to turn or noisy?
On cars with hydraulic power steering, a heavy wheel or a whine when turning usually means low fluid from a leak, a worn power steering pump or a slipping belt. On newer cars with electric power steering, a sudden heavy wheel usually comes with a warning light and points to an electrical fault. Either way, get it checked soon; heavy steering makes it harder to react in an emergency.
Hydraulic vs electric power steering
Older cars and many trucks use a belt-driven pump that pushes fluid to help turn the wheels. Most newer cars use an electric motor on the steering column or rack. The symptoms and causes differ.
| System | Common causes of heavy or noisy steering |
|---|---|
| Hydraulic | Low fluid from a leaking hose or rack, worn pump, slipping or broken belt, old fluid |
| Electric | Low battery voltage, a failed sensor or motor, a wiring fault; usually with a warning light |
| Either | Low front tire pressure, worn ball joints or tie rods, dry suspension joints |
What to check yourself
- Tire pressure on the front tires
- Power steering fluid level, if your car has a reservoir (check the manual)
- Red or amber fluid under the front of the car
- A squeal at startup or when turning, which points to the belt
What we do
We find the source, whether that's a leaking hose, a tired pump, a belt or an electrical fault, and show you. Steering problems can sometimes be simple; one customer's stiff, noisy steering took us minutes to sort out.
From drivers who came to us
Our steering wheel felt stiff and made sounds when we tried to turn it… it took about 5-10 minutes for them to figure out what was wrong with the car.
Transmission was acting up we did not think it would pass smog… it did pass smog and gets better Gas mileage now so happy we took it there

More questions
Is it safe to drive with stiff steering?
You can still steer, but it takes much more effort, especially at low speed. Drive carefully to a shop. If steering failed along with a battery light or rising temperature, the belt may have broken; stop.
Why does my steering whine when I turn the wheel?
That's the classic sound of a power steering pump that's low on fluid or wearing out. Check the fluid level if your car has a reservoir.
My steering got stiff right after a car wash. Why?
Water or high-pressure spray can affect belts and electrical connections. It can also be coincidence. Have it checked rather than waiting to see.
