How often should I rotate my tires?

Short answer

Every 5,000 to 7,500 miles is the common recommendation, which lines up with most oil changes; your owner's manual or maintenance reminder gives your car's exact interval. Rotating moves each tire to a different position so they wear evenly, which extends tread life, keeps the car handling predictably and, on all-wheel-drive cars, helps protect the drivetrain.

Why rotation helps

Each wheel position wears tires differently. Fronts wear on the shoulders from steering; drive wheels wear faster from acceleration. Moving them around evens it out, so all four reach the end of their life together.

Rotation patterns

Car Common pattern
Front-wheel drive Fronts straight back, rears cross to the front
Rear-wheel drive or AWD Rears straight forward, fronts cross to the rear
Directional tires Front to back, same side
Staggered sizes Side to side only, if the tires aren't directional

A rotation is a good moment for a look

With the wheels off, it's easy to see the brakes. One customer's tire rotation revealed rear brake pads that were almost gone; we texted a photo so they could see it for themselves. We also check tread depth and wear patterns, which point to alignment or suspension problems early.

Hyundai Santa Fe
Upon tire rotation Derick let me know (by texting me photo proof) that my brake pads needed changing, my rear pads were almost non existent.

More questions

Why do front tires wear faster?

On front-wheel-drive cars, the fronts steer, carry the engine's weight, do most of the braking and put down the power.

Why does all-wheel drive care about even tire wear?

Many AWD systems are sensitive to differences in tire diameter between wheels. Uneven wear can stress the center differential or coupling. Rotate on schedule and replace all four tires together.

Can I rotate tires with a directional tread?

Yes, front to back on the same side. Staggered setups with different front and rear sizes usually can't be rotated front to back.
